Blooming the Chasen
Important First Step - Prep Your New Chasen

preparation
Purpose: Soaking the chasen in warm water for 3-5 minutes before its first use is crucial. It helps soften the bamboo, preventing it from splintering or cracking when you begin whisking matcha. Soaking also ensures that the bristles remain flexible and won’t snap off during use.
Method: Simply submerge the entire whisk in warm water (not boiling). This prepares the bamboo fibers to bend easily during the whisking process.
Caution: Do not leave the whisk in boiling water for more than 10 minutes, as prolonged exposure to high heat can damage the bamboo, leading to cracks or breakage.

Rinse under running water
Purpose: Rinsing removes any dust, manufacturing residues, or particles from the bamboo, which could affect the flavour of your matcha. This ensures a clean, fresh start for your chasen.
Method: Hold the chasen under a gentle stream of cool water, moving it slightly to rinse between the bristles. Be careful not to pull or twist the tines during this step to avoid damaging them.
Bloom the whisk
Purpose: Blooming the chasen spreads the bristles and opens them up, preparing them for effective whisking. This ensures the bristles are properly aligned and flexible for smooth matcha frothing.
Method: Dip the chasen into a bowl of warm water and gently swirl it in a circular motion. This action helps the bristles naturally fan out and “bloom” into the proper shape.

Dry thoroughly
Purpose: Proper drying ensures the bamboo maintains its shape and doesn’t warp or crack. Leaving moisture trapped between the tines can also promote mold or mildew over time.
Method: After rinsing, give the chasen a gentle shake to remove excess water. Let it air-dry in a well-ventilated area, preferably on a clean cloth or towel. Avoid placing it directly in the sun, as excessive heat can cause the bamboo to dry too quickly and become brittle.
Store properly
Purpose: Storing your chasen correctly after each use helps maintain its longevity and prevents the bristles from becoming misshapen or damaged.
Method: After use and once your chasen has dried, store it upright in a chasen holder or place it on a flat surface where it can keep its shape. Allow the bristles to remain spread out. Avoid storing it in a cramped space or pressing the tines together.
